Memorial Weekend Fishing

The Memorial Day weekend couldn't be ALL work and no play!  Connor and Eric caught some nice fish from the dock (while Ramsey and I were planting fern and playing on the play set).
They caught quite a few good eaters; mostly walleye and larger white bass, but also a few perch as well.
Eric has handed the reigns to Connor to be the Master Fish Cleaner.
And Ramsey is happy to keep his big brubby company during the process.

Memorial Weekend Projects

For once, the weather was [mostly] nice on Memorial Day weekend!  While we watched the boats and jet skis blazing by on the lake, we kept our heads down and worked on our home projects and yard work.  Work done now means more fun later!

While the boys did yard work, I power-washed and stained the front deck.  (...better to do this now when the weather is gorgeous than to wait until it's 90° outside!  It hadn't been done for a few years and was looooong overdue
Ramsey and I worked on getting the flowers planted on Monday.
We planted annuals for color...
And Ferns to cover up the ugly base of our fishing/lake shed.
And since we were digging, Ramsey had fun "planting a tree" in his play set gravel.  Ha!
Dig away, kiddo.... and learn how to use that big shovel! ha!
Oh ya... and I also had an inkling to bake a loaf of bread from scratch - breaking in the dough hook on my stand mixer.  YUM!
That.... was.... an exhausting weekend!!

Let Summer Begin!

As a kick-off to summer, we had a guest at the house for 2 nights and 3 days; Bridger.   It was Connor's week to be at his Mom's, but he wanted to get in on the amazing fishing we've been having lately.   Of course, Ramsey was excited to see his "brother from another mother" - it had been quite some time since we'd seen him.

On the first evening, while "the big boys" did this:
 The little boys did this:
They ran around the yard playing tag, played on the swings, and playset.   I needed to get some things done in the house, so I stayed put.
The next day, while I worked, the boys ran around the house (it sounded like a herd of elephants!), watched YouTube, took Riggsy outside, and did a little gaming.
It was getting loud in the house, so I kicked them out onto the deck.  Ramsey wanted bubbles, so that's what they got!
Bubble Time was good for about an hour, so we'll call that success!
I'm not sure which kiddo got more excitement out of it.
Ramsey found it more fun to chase the giant bubbles and try to pop them with his foam mace.
After Ramsey went to bed, Connor took Julia (his girlfriend) and Bridger out to fish more.  They caught a ton more fish.   Bridger was proud to have reeled in this big white bass:
And of course, Connor got to clean everyone's catches!  He said he didn't get much time to actually cast, since he was constantly adding minnows to Julia's and Bridger's poles.  The fish were biting like mad that evening.
The next day after work, I decided Ramsey and Bridger needed to get some fresh air, so I took them to the walking trail by our place.  I was in dire need of getting out of the house as well!
Ramsey stopped a few times to blow bubbles with his bubble sword.
And we had to have a pic on the bench just off the point.
We might stick to the roads for future walks.  When we returned, I picked ticks off of the boys and Riggs for a while.  Or, perhaps next time, they will heed my warnings and not roll around in the tall grass or hide underneath the cedar trees.   ;-)

Just Another Fishing Post

We seem to be having a LOT of fishing posts already for the year.  But seriously, it's been quite ridiculous!  The dock fishing has been incredible.
It seems that some nights every cast has a hit.   The perch in the pic above is a jumbo, so it should give an idea of the size of good eaters we are catching.
The amazing catch this year has been due to the overpopulation of the lake; fish food is lower in supply and higher in demand.  Due the overages, Game Fish & Parks has removed the size minimum from our lake (previously, walleye had to be 14").   Still, we are not keeping anything that is too small.   This seems to be quite a familiar scene at our household, multiple times per week, albeit Eric or Connor at the helm, cleaning away.

Connor - Saved Papers

I have saved a lot of Connor's school papers from the past 12 years.  As I was going through them recently, I had quite a few chuckles and smiles.  And, some of his writings really touched my heart.  I can't believe the sweet little 6-year-old that I met all those years ago (the summer before his First Grade year) is now going into his first year of college!
4th or 5th Grade? (I was good about making sure I had dates for most of them - rats!)
 7th Grade:
 5th Grade?
 First Grade:
He's always been amazing at Math!
...and a great speller!
2013.... when Eric had his Pulmonary Emboli.
Connor was with us when we took Eric to the ER.

And, the "piece d' resistance"... the letter in 2009 to "Private Ryan".   He loved the film "Saving Private Ryan"!
My folders are full and memories are long.  Each one of these brings back such sweet moments.
We love you, Connor!
